J.M. Marlin. Model: Ballard. CAL: 40-63. MFG: 1862-91. S/N: 16723. Lever falling block breach loader. 30'' Octagon barrel. The checkered wood stock is very good, with wonderful rippled grain. There are multiple grain pops, a small chip near toe, along with other scratches, dings & wear from use & age. The smooth forend is likely a replacement, which is excellent, with few scuffs. The metal finish has worn gun metal gray, but with spotty areas of brown patina. Left side of receiver is marked, ''J.M. MARLIN NEW HAVEN CONN.U.S.A.'', ''BALLARD'S PATENT NOV.5.196''. Bottom of receiver is marked with S/N, Top of barrel marked, ''40-63''. Bore is very good, bright, but with some roughness. Barrel carries an elevation adjustable buckhorn with V-Notch & a simple blade front sight. Stock fitted with an upper tang Crescent metal buttplate. Lever hangs with slack. Dual set trigger. Comes with a wooden cleaning rod mounted under the barrel. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 600 to 1200
