FN (Fabrique Nationale) BROWNING, Model 1900, Cal. 32 or 7.65x17mm, Semi-Auto, Mfg. 1901 EARLY SECOND YEAR PRODUCTION, SN: 11814, 4'' barrel, all numbers matching, The 1900 pistol was the invention of John Moses Browning. It was introduced as the model 1899 & then with small improvements became the 1900. Produced only in 32 ACP., it was the first practical & reliable automatic handgun to be adopted by many armies. President Theodore Roosevelt kept one in his bedside drawer while President & at home after office. This particular example is a ''W'' stamped pistol, as illustrated on page 154 of Anthony Vanderlinden's book ''FN BROWNING PISTOLS''. The ''W'' indicating this pistol was issued to the Belgian Gendarmerie or Belgian Military, with regiment issue stamping of an encircled ''I'' & the # ''716''. These early ''W'' stamped examples are sought by collectors & do bring a premium. They are typically well used, therefore finding one in original, numbers matching & good condition is difficult. The artillery re-issued checkered wooden grips on this example are good, with areas of smoothing of the checkering & contusions. There is also a 1/2'' crack on the right grip. The metal finish has worn a gun metal gray, but remnants of the original blue is present in protected areas. Bore is excellent. Lanyard staple. Original FN stamped magazine. A nice original example & collectible as an early production Belgian Military issued pistol. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 800 to 1500
