Description

RARE Winchester, Model 1876 ''Centennial Rifle'', Saddle Ring Carbine, 3rd Variation, CAL: 45-75, MFG: 1884, SN: 43428, Lever Action Carbine, 22'' Round barrel, Full mag. The Model 1876 was originally referred to as the Centennial Rifle due to its introduction in the same year as America's Centennial anniversary. Nearly the entire production of the big Model 1876 Winchester was devoted to rifle manufacture. There was a considerable contract for carbines from the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police, but aside from these historic arms, Winchester made carbines for the civilian market on a very limited basis. Total production of all Model 1876's from 1876 to its discontinuance in 1888 (with about 300 additional arms made intermittently to 1898) was a mere 63,871. In comparison, Winchester produced 323,926 of the smaller Model 1873's from 1873-1889. By the end of production of the Model 1873, 720,609 had been produced, More than 10 fold that of the 1876. For this obvious reason, all Model 1876 Winchesters are scarce. The 1876 Saddle Ring Carbines are seldom encountered today as so few were made. Northwest Mounted Police carbines (Mountie Carbines) were a special variant used by the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police. They had a 22'' (56 centimeters) round barrel, were chambered in .45-75 Winchester, with a full length forend & a military style folding ladder rear sight calibrated in meters. This carbine is configured the same, but carries the standard ''1876'' marked folding ladder rear sight, with slide marking from 2 to 10. This carbine was built for the civilian market & is much rarer. The original straight grip wood stocks are excellent, displaying the original finish. They display several minor contusions, scrapes & scratches, with a few little edge nicks to the back edge of the forend. The metal blue finish has entirely tone to a mix of speckled brown patina, gray darkened finish & areas worn to gun metal gray. Bore is very good, displaying light spotting & pitting amongst strong rifling. In addition to the flip-up rear ladder sight, the barrel carries a box small blade carbine front sight. Buttstock carries a carbine metal buttplate. Orignal saddle ring. A rare & all original 1876 SRC collectible. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 7000 to 12000
