EXTREMELY RARE & WONDERFUL, Winchester Model 1892 Full Musket Rifle, with Saber Bayonet. CAL: 44 W.C.F., MFG: 1920, SN: 884533, Lever Action Musket, 30'' Round barrel, Full mag. It is estimated that less than 1% of the total Model 1892 production was in the musket configuration due to Winchester's failure to secure government contracts for the variation, thereby making Model 1892 Muskets extremely rare in any condition. This musket is chambered for the sought after .44 W.C.F. cartridge. The stock & forearm are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. They are excellent, appearing to carry the original finish with few handling marks or contusions. It's fitted with the distinctive long forearm secured by three barrel bands, with sling swivels mounted on the middle barrel band & stock. The barrel & magazine have a smooth blue/gray finish, with areas thinning having a brown patina & possibly mixed with added blue. The receiver, bolt, hammer and lever retain 50% original blue finish, mostly due to finish flaking loss, with the balance showing a thin developing brown patina. The barrel bands, trigger, loading gate, buttplate & sling swivels were all blue finished, showing appropriate wear. The right side of the end barrel band/cap has a steel screw mounted block, which with the front sight, serves as a lug for the saber. The barrel carries the military style, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards, which has lost most of its spring, & a carbine block front sight. The stock has a carbine style sliding trapdoor buttplate. Boor is good, with areas of cleaned pitting & roughness amongst strong rifling. The top of the barrel has a faintly roll-stamped: ''MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 14, 1884.'' in two lines behind the lower barrel band & in front of the rear sight. ''44 W.C.F.'' is faintly roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight & the receiver & is also thin. The oval Winchester ''W/P'' proof mark is stamped on the top of the barrel, next to the caliber stamping & on the top of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped ''MODEL 92/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF. & FGN.'' in three lines. The SN is roll-stamped across the underside of the front end of the receiver. Appears to be mechanically excellent Comes with a rarer brass handled saber bayonet & the even rarer original leather scabbard with brass trimmings. A musket outfitted with a saber bayonet is among the greatest rarities in Model 1892 collecting. Most of these muskets are believed to have filled foreign orders & therefore are rarely encountered in the U.S. market. A fabulous example for the most complete of Winchester lever collections.
