Spencer Repeating Rifle Co., Model 1865 Carbine, CAL: 56-56 (52 cal), MFG: 1860-69, SN: 48960, Lever Action Repeating Rifle, 22'' barrel. By the end of the Civil War more than 144,000 Spencer rifles & carbines had been manufactured with over two-thirds of those purchased by the U.S. government. The three line address on the receiver reads: ''SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/ PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860''. The original straight grip wood stocks are good & solid. There are (3) grain cracks, (2) starting at the buttplate, (1) starting at the saddle ring bar, an edge chip at the heel held by a nail & other contusions, scrapes & dings. There are two faint cartouches on the left side of the stock below the saddle ring bar, neither are legible. There is a small missing chip at the top of the buttplate tang & a ''I'' shaped carved initial on the left side of the stock. The metal finish has worn to a mix of metal grey & brown patina, with consistent spotting throughout. Bore is good & bright, but with pitting amongst proud rifling. This rifle was likely used during Civil War &/or Indian/American War, & during this time the rear sight was probably broken off & replaced with a frontier gunsmith notched brass rear sight. Barrel also holds a boxed silver blade front sight. Smooth metal trapdoor buttplate, with internal mag tube. Single rear sling loop. These are somewhat rare, a true piece of American history. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 2000
