Springfield Armory Conversion of a Burnside Rifle Co. Model 1865 Spencer Carbine to Infantry Rifle, CAL: 50RF, MFG: 1860-69 (Receiver), SN: 25145, Lever Action Repeating Rifle, 32 1/2'' barrel. Springfield Armory converted 1,108 Spencer carbines into infantry rifles starting in 1871 & continued until 1874. The alteration included new parts & refurbishments such as; a blued 32'' long Springfield M1868 barrel, chambered for a .50 caliber Springfield (.56-50 Spencer), a Stabler Cut-off system, beveled hammer nose, thicker forend stock, Original buttstock , Conversion forend, two barrel bands, post iron front sight, M1868 military rear sight & cleaning rod. Comes with the correct & rare U.S. Springfield ''U.S.'' marked angular socket bayonet. The receiver retains the sling bar & ring from the original carbine. Top plate of the receiver is clearly stamped ''MODEL / 1865 / SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860 / MANUFG AT PROV., R. I. / BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.'' & the left side of the barrel is clearly stamped with the original carbine SN. The right side of the stock, behind the saddle ring, is clearly stamped with a cartouche that reads ''ESA''. The straight grip wood stocks are excellent & solid. There are contusions, scrapes & dings, mostly on the stock. The metal blue finish on the barrel has toned to a mix of remaining original blue & brown patina, with spots worn to metal grey. The case-hardened receiver has faint case-colors remaining only in protected areas, mostly worn to gun metal grey, with shadowing & a thin aged patina. Bore is very good & bright, with intermittent roughness amongst strong rifling. The barrel holds a M1868 military rear sight & post iron front sight. Smooth metal trapdoor buttplate, with internal mag tube. Sling loops present. Overall a very nice example of a Springfield converted rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1500 to 3000
