Mannlicher-Schoenauer, Model 1903 Carbine, CAL: 6.5X54, MFG: 1910, SN: 9588, Bolt Action Rifle, 20'' barrel. The Mannlicher-Schoenauer was originally designed as a military arm, tested & rejected by Portugal, but accepted by Greece in 1903. Only 300,000 of the military rifles would be manufactured over the following three decades as Greece was the only army to accept the design. While the Mannlicher-Schoenauer failed as a military rifle for economic reasons (it cost nearly twice as much as contemporary Mausers), it found success in the sporting world. Though limited numbers of commercial rifles had been built on the 1900 action, it wasn't until 1903 that production was standardized. The Mannlicher was one of the first of the small-bore, bolt-action repeaters that would turn the sporting world on its ear. The 1898 version of the British Encyclopedia of Sport stated that the 6.5 &.303 ''have effected a revolution in game shooting.'' Like earlier Mannlicher turn bolts, the Mannlicher-Schoenauer became popular with fine English gunsmiths, from Gibbs to Holland & Holland, who built custom guns on both military & commercial actions in carbine, rifle & takedown forms. The success of the 1903 Mannlicher-Schoenauer spawned a line of Steyr-built rifles. The checkered, cheeked & metal capped pistol grip Mannlicher style stock is excellent, with very few minor handling marks to the original finish. The metal blue finish rates 90% on the barrel, 85% on the receiver. Bore is excellent. The barrel carries the original flip over two leaf rear sight & a ramp elevated small blade front sight. Double set triggers. Buttstock carries a metal trapdoor buttplate with three compartments, one for the original 4 piece metal cleaning rod, which is still in the butt, & two additional holes for extra cartridge storage. Two sling loop which carry the correct period leather sling. An overall excellent & collectible example of this finely Austrian made bolt action rifle. * FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
