FABULOUS August Schuler Suhl, Hammer Double Rifle, CAL: .43 Mauser, MFG: Late 19th century, SN: 1272, Break Action Hammer SxS Rifle, 25 1/4'' barrels, with matted solid rib. In 1753 there were three Schuler's recorded as gun makers, these being Christoph, Jakob & Johann Thomas. Also in 1753 Ernst Friedrich Schuler began a family tradition of stock making. Ernst Friedrich was born in 1729 & died in 1781. In 1835 Friedrich Wilhelm Schuler opened a arms factory at 22 Judithstrasse in Suhl. Friedrich was born in 1816. Friedrich had a younger brother August Gottlieb Schuler (1819-1906) who took over the firm in 1850 & began making arms under his name. In 1880 the business was passed to Augusts sons Friedrich August (1854-1943) & Paulus Oskar (1855-1926). According to the consingor, the .43 Mauser caliber was made for royalty. The higher prongs is interpreted as meaning higher royalty. The checkered, cheeked, & straight grip wood stocks are excellent. They display lovely grain, with minor scratches, scrapes & contusions to a bees wax finish. Ebony tipped forend. The metal blue finish on the barrels rates 90%. The finely engraved German silver receiver, side panels, hammers & break lever are silver tone & display fine hand engraving. Serial number is marked on the water table, along with a ''JJR'' & proof stampings. The barrel flat & lug is stamped with an ''SAS'' monogram, ''AUG. SCHULER SUHL'', proof stampings, ''118/35'' & ''172/28'' stamps on each side, ''DK'', ''RS'' & four ''K'' stampings within circles. Bores are excellent. The solid matted rib holds fixed wide V rear & platform front blade sight, with flip-up ivory bead. The trigger guard is a fantastic scroll carved horn material. There is a trapdoor compartment in the belly of the stock, which houses spaces for 5 rounds of ammunition. Buttstock carries a black plastic buttplate. Sling loops present. LOP: 13 7/8''. A truly wonderful example of a London hand made double rifle.* Antique, No FFL REQ. - Value: 4000 to 6000
