EXTREMELY RARE! LeMat, ''Grape-Shot'' Revolver, CAL: measures .42 & .64, MFG: 1856-65, SN: 1268, O/U Percussion Revolver, 6 3/4'' top barrel, 5'' lower barrel, 9 shot cylinder. This unique sidearm was known as the ''Grape-Shot'' revolver. It was developed in New Orleans, LA in 1856 by Jean Alexandre Le Mat, whose efforts were backed by P. G. T. Beauregard, who became a general in the Confederate States Army. When war broke out, LeMat received Confederate contracts to produce 5,000 revolvers. Plans were then made to manufacture the gun across seas & then import them into the Confederacy. Confederate gun runners were able to slip shipments of the gun through the U.S. Navy blockade & it is estimated that about 2,500 out of the 2,900 produced made it into Confederate service. LeMat's revolver were used by famous Confederate officers such as: Major Generals Braxton Bragg, J. E. B. Stuart, Richard H. Anderson, and Captain Henry Wirz. Confederate Major General J. E. B. Stuart was known to favor the LeMat revolver over others at the time. The top rib is marked ''Col. Le Mat Bte s-g-d-g Paris''. The right side of the barrel is marked with the full SN ''1268'' followed by a ''(star) over LM'' marking (collectors believe this to be Confederate). The SN is repeated on the right side of the frame. The left side of the hammer is marked with a ''0'' & the right side has a crude ''star''. The screws all have minor engravings, consistent with other seen examples. The original, checkered wood grips are excellent, with smooth checkering. The metal has worn to a mix of metal grey, remaining blue & brown patina, with cleaned pitting & dings throughout. Top bore is very good, with pitting & roughness amongst proud rifling. Bottom bore is very good, with consistent roughness. The barrel holds an original front sight. Lanyard loop present. Missing ram rod. Comes with an aged leather holster. This is your opportunity to own a rare piece of Civil War history.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 10000 to 20000
