Winchester, Model 1866, Third Variation, .44 Henry Cal., MFG. 1870 (Antique), SN: 37234, Lever Action Rifle, 24 1/4'' Octagon barrel, Full mag. The Model 1866 proved an immediate success for Winchester, with around 170,000 guns produced. The M1866 appeared in three forms, carbine, rifle, & musket. The carbine made up 127,000 of the guns produced, making it by far the most popular, another 15,000 were musket, leaving just 28,000 rifles. A fairly small amount of rifles when comparing it to other Winchester models. The original wood stocks on this example are very good & solid, having added oils over the original finish giving it a rich & darkened oil appearance. The forend has nearly a full length tight grain crack on the right side, while both stocks display numerous small nicks, gouges & contusions, especially on the stock. The metal finish on the barrel & mag has fully toned to a full coverage dark chocolate brown patina. The brass receiver, forend cap & buttplate have developed an even aged mustard tone. Bore is good to very good, with some cleaned pitting & roughness amongst solid rifling. Barrel mounted with the correct flip-up ladder rear sight, slide graduation to 900 yds & a small blade front sight. Consistent with the 3rd model, it has the block font SN stamped behind the trigger on lower tang. Rifle has the hinged trapdoor crescent brass buttplate. Fitted with an early factory sling loop in the fore cap & stock. The action is tight when it's cycled. This is a very nice 1866 rifle. Retaining much of its original character. A great antique brass rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 6000 to 12000
