RARE Winchester, Model 1890, 1st Variation, CAL: 22 SHORT, MFG: 1891, SN: 8958, Pump Action Rifle, 24 3/8'' Octagon barrel. Early 2nd yr case-hardened gun. The original straight grip stock & corncob forend are very good & solid, with the original finish wearing thin & darkened with age & use. There are some minor, with scrapes, nicks & dings. The metal blue finish on the barrel has worn & been heavily buffed to silver leaving abrasions & scarring. Ironically, the roll stamp & caliber marking remain. The non-professional who did this appears to have tried to prepare the barrel for restoration, but left it very rough & did not proceed further. The case-hardened receiver has also worn & been polished silver, but mostly smooth & without the scarring like the barrel. The top of the bolt & trigger guard have natural brown patina. Mag tube has 75% of original blue. Bore is poor, with some visible rifling amongst heaving pitting & roughness. The barrel holds a fixed rear sight & blade front sight. The buttstock carries a smooth crescent metal buttplate. Early production rifle, in short only, which would benefit from a completed restoration. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 300 to 600
