Description

RARE EARLY VARIATION WWII Colt Service Model Ace 22 LR Pistol, .22 LR Cal, MFG 1941, SN: S.M.2306, 5'' barrel, This is an original, early variation WWII US Army contract Model 1911A1 ''Service Model'' Ace pistol chambered in 22LR. These were originally produced as a low-cost method to train troops that duplicated the weight, feel & function of the original Model 1911A1 pistol. This model used the new ''Floating Chamber'' designed by ''Carbine Williams'' that readily made the pistol fire exactly like the Model 1911A1. The SN of this pistol places its shipment to the Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory on Jan 10, 1942 barely a month after Pearl Harbor. The left side of the slide is marked ''COLTS PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A. / PATENT NUMBERS [] 2.090.656 [] 2.090.657'' & with a Rampant colt. The right side of the slide is marked ''COLT'', ''SERVICE / MODEL'', ''ACE'' in diamond, ''.22'' & ''LONG / RIFLE''. The left of the frame has the ''R.S.'' inspected stamp for Col. Robert Sears, who inspected Colt 1911A1 & Colt Service Ace pistol from 1940-45, with the Colt ''X'' & ''VP'' inside a triangle proof on the trigger guard bow. The right side of the frame has ''60'' on the trigger guard. This early production military ACE does not carry the ''UNTIED STATES PROPERTY'' stamping over the SN ''SM 2306'', which became standared on later parkerized varitations. As stated, does carries the military inspectors mark of Government issued examples. It has the desirable adjustable rear sight, with target height front sight. It is fitted with a narrow checkered hammer, stamped trigger & arched serrated mainspring housing. The early production examples carried Colt checkered wood grips, with later varitation changed to plastic grips. The wood grips on this example are excellent, with sharp checkering. The early production high polish metal blue finish rates 95% on slide & frame, except on the front strap where it is thinning to gun metal gray. Only the first 4000 were produced with high luster blue as the later variation had a military parkerized finish. Bore is excellent. Comes with two correct mags, one of each variation, one two tone, one fully blued & both marked ''COLT / 22 ACE (in diamond) L.R. / SERVICE MODEL''. This is an extraordinary high condition & desirable early U.S. wartime Colt Service Model Ace pistol.* FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 7000 to 10000
