Description

RARE Sharps, New Model 1863 Cartridge Conversion, Freund Marked, CAL: 45-70, MFG: 1871-81, SN: 86613, Falling Block Single Shot Rifle, 31'' Octagon barrel. This rifle has a ''FREUND'' stamp indicating it was either sold by or worked on by one of the Freund brothers. The Freund marking indicates it was sold or modified at his Durango shop in 1881 or later. George and Frank had an amicable separation in 1881 and Frank stayed in Cheyenne, Wy. and George moved to Durango, Co. Both continued doing Freund improvements and selling guns. Frank & George Freund were two of the finer gunsmiths of the West, but were overlooked, due to the fact that they concentrated on making improvements to existing rifles, rather than manufacturing their own complete firearms. Frank was the first one to emigrate to the United States in 1857, originally working for E. Remington & Sons & continued to work for them until the Civil War, when he enlisted in the Union Army. George joined his brother in 1866 as a gunsmith. In the late 1860's, the Freund Brothers moved out West, fixing firearms along the way for frontiersmen & buffalo hunters. Eventually, finding themselves moving along with the railroad construction gangs. They established ''branches'' in 10 different rail cities & became well recognized for repairing & improving all sorts of frontier firearms. After the railway was completed, the Freund Brothers had to find a place to settle & by 1870 they had made their way to Cheyenne, WY where they set up a branch. They then headed south to Denver, CO, where they opened a shop. In 1875 they sold to J.P Lower & moved back to WY. Over the next 3 years, Frank received 3 patents on improvements to the Sharps 1874 model. He went on to fully covert about 300 Sharps rifles to his improvements. This example has the Freund logo, just ahead of the trigger, which reads ''GEO FREUND'S REGISTD 1869 TRADEMARK'', with a skull & cross bones image in the center of the stamping. It appears that the modification made on this example had to do with the trigger, including possible internal adjustments. The left side of the receiver is marked ''SHARPS PAT Sept 12th 1848'', the side lock is marked in a two lines ''SHARPS RIFLE CO PAT APR 6 1869''. The full SN is stamped on the upper tang. The barrel is marked ''OLD RELIABLE'', ''SHARPS RIFLE CO BRIDGEPORT CONN'', followed by ''CALIBRE'', with the caliber numbers worn smooth. The straight grip wood stock is excellent & solid, displaying numerous small contusions, scrapes, nicks & dings. The metal finish has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina, with spotting & speckling. Bore is fair, dark & with roughness amongst visible rifling The barrel holds a flip- up ladder rear sight, filled blank 2nd rear dovetail & a large brass blade front sight. Buttstock carries a checkered metal buttplate. This Sharps rifle is full of character & potentially upgraded by one of the Old West's best gunsmiths. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
