Description

Spencer Repeating Rifle, Model 1865 Carbine, CAL: 50, MFG: 1860's, SN: 2000, Lever Action Falling Block Carbine, 20'' barrel. On June 27, 1864, the Burnside Rifle Co. entered into a contract with the Ordnance Dept. to manufacture about 30,500 Spencer Model carbines, with deliveries to be completed by Aug. 31, 1865. With the changes directed to be made to the carbines, deliveries did not start until April 15, 1865 & continued until the end of October. Ultimately, 30,496 M1865 Spencer carbines were delivered. Burnside paid Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. a royalty of 50 cents for each carbine delivered to the Ordnance Dept., & $1 was paid for the 4,000 Spencer carbines sold to military individuals & civilians. The top flat of the receiver is marked in a four line address, ''SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE PAT'D MARCH 6. 1860 MANUF'D AT PROV R.I. BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO'', with ''MODEL 1865''. The SN is stamped on the upper tang. The right side of the stock has an inlaid silver nameplate, inscribed with ''S.J Howell'', in cursive, with an image of an eagle & small crest, with arrows & leaf branches on either side. The right side of the stock has two silver decorative inlays & there are two inspector cartouches behind the saddle ring bar. The straight grip wood stock is very good, but does have a 3'' grain crack above the toe on either side of the stock. The stock appears to carry the original finish, while the forend looks to have been lightly sanded & re-oiled. Both have numerous contusions, scrapes, nicks & dings. The metal finish on the barrel has toned gray, browning as it thins, with remnants of original blue in more protected areas. The case-hardened receiver, lever & hammer have toned to a gun metal gray, with case-color shadowing remaining. Bore is excellent & bright, with a few spots. The barrel holds a flip-up rear ladder sight & an elevated blade front sight. Buttstock carries a smooth metal buttplate, where magazine tube enters & exits the stock. This Burnside Contract Model 1865 is a great example of a weapon used by the US Federal Cavalry after the close of the Civil War. It would make a great addition to any military display or antique rifle collection. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
