DESIREABLE! Whitney Pheonix Military Musket, Freund Marked, CAL: Appx. 50, MFG: 1870's to 80's, S/N: 3050, Single Shot Breech Load, 28 1/2'' barrel, marked ''Freund & Bro''. This Freund rifle has an unusual hinged breech, or swing gate, which also activates the ejector when fully opened. Frank & George Freund were two of the finer gunsmiths of the Old West, but were often overlooked in history, due to the fact that they usually concentrated on making improvements to existing rifles, rather than manufacturing their own complete firearms. Frank was the first one to emigrate to the U.S. in 1857, originally working for E. Remington & Sons & continued to work for them until the Civil War, when he enlisted in the Union Army. George joined his brother in 1866 as a gunsmith. In the late 1860's, the Freund Brothers moved out West, fixing firearms along the way for frontiersmen & buffalo hunters. Eventually, finding themselves moving along with the railroad construction gangs. They established ''branches'' in 10 different rail cities & became well recognized for repairing & improving all sorts of frontier firearms. After the railway was completed, the Freund Brothers had to find a place to settle & by 1870 they had made their way to Cheyenne, WY where they set up a branch. They then headed south to Denver, CO, where they opened a shop. In 1875 they sold to J.P Lower & moved back to WY. Over the next 3 years, Frank received 3 patents on improvements to the Sharps 1874 model & he went on to fully covert about 300 Sharps rifles to his improvements. This is a rare example of a Freund marked rifle. The original straight wrist wood stock is very good & solid, with added protective oils over the original finish. There are several small chips or splinter of wood missing along the upper edges of the forend, along with numerous other small contusions, scratches & scrapes. The metal finish has worn gun metal gray, with spotty areas of brown patina. The breech block is marked with S/N, top of barrel is marked, ''FREUND & BRO''. Bore is good, dark, with pitting amongst proud rifling. Simple blade front sight, tangent aperture & V-notch rear sight, marked 1 to 4 on side. Military metal buttplate, with brown patina. Sling loops. A rare western frontier rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 3500
