RARE!!! Springfield Armory, Model: 1899 Philippine Constabulary Carbine (made from a first year production 1898 Krag Rifle), Cal: .30-40 Krag, MFG: 1898, Antique, S/N: 114021, Bolt action rifle, 25'' Barrel. In 1906, Henry T.Allen who was the Chief of the Philippine Constabulary, requested a rifle that was suitable for his shorter Philippine Constabulary troops, they needed a rifle that was carbine length but still could take a bayonet & standard sling, so the 1899 Philippine Constabulary Carbine was made. With the U.S. just adopting the 1903 Springfield, the old Krag rifle was the perfect option since we had plenty laying around & the Philippine troops were already trained on the Krag. They converted rifles & carbines from all different Krag models into this pattern, which was just cutting down the barrel (if it was a rifle) adding a new shorter rifle style stock, adding a bayonet lug & standard sling swivels, three arsenals converted them, Springfield, Rock Island, & Manila from 1906-1915, total production numbers vary from around 5,000-10,000, but with these rifles all getting sent to the Philippines and most staying there, they are extremely rare & collectable today. The straight wrist wood stock is very good with light nicks, dings, dents, scratches, scuffs & wear from use/age, very faint ''P'' in circle cartouche on the bottom of the wrist. The metal finish on the barrel rates 70% with thinned bluing, light rust speckling & scratches, the metal on the receiver has toned to a brown patina with faint remnants of bluing remaining in protected areas, magazine & extractor are fully blued, likely replaced when it was converted. Left side of the receiver is marked ''U.S.'', ''MODEL 1898 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY.'' & S/N. Bore is fair, beginning to darken with thinned rifling & roughness throughout. Barrel holds a blade on block front sight, Tangent V-notch rear sight with a flip up aperture sight, ladder is marked 2 to 20. steel trapdoor butt plate with light rust speckling, nothing inside trapdoor. Bottom sling mounts with stacking swivel. A very rare find & would make a nice addition to your collection. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
