Description

Manufacture d'armes Chatellerault, Model: MLE 1874 Artillery Musketoon (Fusil Gras), Cal: 11x59mmR, MFG: 1883, S/N: A94809, Bolt action single shot rifle, 2 1/4'' barrel. The straight wrist wood stock is good, stock has been sanded & heavily sanded in areas & re-finished, lower tang, upper tang, lower sling loop base, & butt plate are proud to the wood, very faint S/N marking on left cheek that vaguely looks like the S/N on the gun, dogwood plug on right cheek that marks French government property but the cartouche over it has been sanded away. The metal has toned to a even dark gray patina with areas of wear and bear metal showing in spots. Left side of receiver is marked ''MANUFACTURE D'ARMES CHATELLERAULT'', ''MLE 1873'', ''M80'' & some faint proof marks, left side of barrel is marked with S/N, ''JH'', & some proofs, right side of barrel is marked ''C 1883'', ''MA'', & some proofs. S/N matched bolt & bayonet lug. Bore is fair, bright & mirror like with heavily worn but still present rifling. Barrel holds a barleycorn on black front sight with a flip up ladder deep V-notch rear sight marked 5 to 11. stock carries a heavily worn & dinged brass butt plate. Has bottom sling loops. Has a S/N mismatched cleaning rod. The Gras was France's first metallic cartridge loading rifle & is a conversion of the earlier Chassepot rifle which was a needle fire paper cartridge. With metallic cartridges just being invented & tested out, it was common to have case ruptures when firing & without any safety mechanisms put in place the escaping gas could be a real issue for the shooter & that was a problem with this rifle, so in 1880 a channel was cut into the bolt to vent the gas from a ruptured case away from the shooters face, rifles with this update will be marked M80 on the receiver which is present on this rifle. The Artillery Musketoon was meant for the artillery troops, they still needed a rifle but it also need to not get in the way of their main duty of operation the cannons & artillery, they might still encounter main line infantry if there is a break through or if the cannons run out of ammo & get they pushed up to fill the main ranks so you cant just give them a normal cavalry carbine they needed a bayonet, so a lot of country's around this period made the artillery crews their own model of rifle.
