FABULOUS Winchester, Model 1886, 50-100-450 Cal., MFG: 1892 (Antique), SN: 68478, Lever Action Rifle, 25'' Half octagon/half round barrel, 1/2 Button mag. This early special order deluxe rifle is rare & special in many ways, for its caliber, the matted barrel, bbl configuration, & the fact that it is a case-hardened rifle. One of the rarest features is the matted barrel. According to a 2007 WACA article on the subject, Winchester records indicate only 206 matted barrel 1886 rifles were produced, making this deluxe example extremely rare. Mounted with exceptionally beautiful, center crotch, feathered grain American walnut with ''H'' style checkered forearm, serpentine pistol grip stock with a black triangle inlay & a Winchester hard rubber, widow's peak, shotgun style buttplate. The stocks are excellent, with virtually all the original finish & just a few minor handling marks or scuffs. The original metal blue finish on the barrel rates 95%, with a few abrasions & spots of light pitting. Receiver, lever, hammer & forend cap are all case-hardened, displaying muted case-colors. The sliding bolt retains 97% of its original bright blue. The receiver is fitted with a Lyman adjustable flip-up tang sight, The barrel holds a roll over rear sight, with two additional leafs for 50, 100 & 200 yds shooting. The front sight is a Rocky Mountain silver blade. Bore is excellent & bright, with some spotty areas of haze. Comes with a Winchester Gun Museum Factory Records Letter, which discusses configuration, history & production dates. According to the letter, the rifle was originally configured in 45-90 & was shipped on July 29th 1892. It was then returned for rework on August 5th 1896 & December 9th 1896. Based on the configuration, honest wear & characteristics of the rifle, it seems clear that the original owner had it changed to a 50 caliber during one of these two visits back to the factory. This excellent & high condition deluxe rifle is extremely collectible as an early case-hardened antique Special Order rifle.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 25000 to 35000
