Description

Meriden Manfg Co., Model ''Triplett & Scott Rifle'', CAL: 50 R.F, MFG: 1864-66, SN: 4056, Swivel Breech Loading Rifle, 30'' round barrel. The straight grip American walnut stock & forend are fair. There is a 5 1/4'' glue repaired break/crack left side of the wrist, several small grain cracks on the right wrist & a small 1'' crack on the left side by the buttplate. The stocks still remain solid after repairs & displays small contusions, scrapes, nicks & dings. Marked on left side of receiver in two lines, '' MERIDEN MANGF. CO.'', ''MERIDEN CONN.'' On upper receiver tang: ''TRIPLETT & SCOTT - PATENT DEC 6, 1864''. The right side of the frame is stamped with the full SN. The metal surfaces all carry a rust brown patina, with rust pitting & speckling. The barrel holds a flip-up ladder rear sight, with no graduation marks & a heavy inverted ''V'' blade front sight. Bore is good, with spotty areas of pitting near the muzzle. Buttstock carries a smooth, curved metal buttplate. The unique action appears to function properly. This rifle was issued to Kentucky Home Guard troops who were assigned to protect the supply lines of the Union Army under General Sherman's command. A unique & truly strange two-piece design, with the breech face, firing controls, magazine & buttstock as the rear most assembly, attached to the firing chamber, barrel & forend assembly by a pivoting joint. The gun used a seven round tubular magazine in the buttstock, similar the Spencer, but not removable. The magazine tube is situated off center to the left, along the toe line of the stock. This design left almost no wood in the buttstock over the magazine tube & left the wrist very weak. Every Triplett & Scott has a severe cracks, & often wood loss, as seen in this example as well. To operate the action, the hammer is placed on half cock, & a thumb release catch depressed on the rear of the receiver. This allowed the shooter to rotate the forward half of the receiver to the right (clockwise) & as the forward portion rotated an automatic ejector would extract the spent cartridge case from the receiver, dumping it on the ground. As the forward portion of the receiver was rotated further around, it pushed a spring-loaded door open, which covered the magazine tube. This allows a cartridge to be fed into the firing chamber. Rotating the action back to the left (counter clockwise) closes & locks the action & cocks the hammer fully making the gun ready for firing. While this seems like a complicated system, it did work well & with training, a solider could operate the gun with some efficiency. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 1500
