RARE J. Stevens, Model 425 High Power, marked Cal. 25 REM, MFG. 1911-17, SN: 1940, Lever Action Rifle, 22'' Round barrel, 2/3 length mag. The 425 was designed by John Redfield & represented the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Companies entry into the centerfire arena. Although some sources claim there were 26,000 of these rifles produced, that is incorrect. More commonly accepted amongst knowledgeable collectors & factory historians is that less than 5,000 were produced & possible less than 1,000. The model was only produced or cataloged from 1911-17 & was serialized with at least one other Stevens model produced during this period, thus accounting for the confusion surrounding serialization. Peter Zobian, a prominent 425 collector has concluded from his research & exhaustive search, that Brophy's information in the Marlin book is most likely correct in that Steven (Savage) only made less than 1,000 of these rifles. His research had only turned up 117 examples, serialized between 1,021 & 5,594 in the four calibers, .25, .30, .32 & .35 REM. Remember other models also fall into that same serialization. Regardless of which production figure is actually correct, this model is one of the rarest of the lever models produced in the glory era of Winchester, Marlin & Savage lever rifles. This specimen is stamped 25 REM, a rimless centerfire cartridge. The original walnut wood stocks are very good & solid, with numerous small scuffs, scratches & contusions to the original thinning & flaking finish. The metal blue finish is a professional reblue on the barrel, mag tube, lever, forend cap, buttplate & rear sight, rating 95% overall, with some light pitting under the blue. The metal stamping all remain sharp. The original blued receiver retains approximately 30% of the original blue toning brown, with the balance worm mostly gun metal gray. Has 2 factory screw filled holes on the top of the receiver for possible scope mounting. The upper tang has three screw filled holes from previous tang sight mounting. The Barrel fitted with an adjustable rear & blade front sights. Bore is very good. Stock carries a correct factory crescent metal buttplate, but it sits slightly askew. The action function is tight & smooth. The rifle comes with a Hornady 25 Remington 2 die set, a Hornady25 Rem Sizing die & 60 rounds of 25 Remington reloads, 54 of which have ''30 REM'' headstamps having been resized or necked down to the 25 REM size & 6 rounds of reloads in older original ''25 Rem'' brass. A great package of rifle reload quipment & reloaded ammo. Very nice overall appearance on this rare & collectible lever rifle. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 800 to 1500
