Sharps, Model New Model 1859 Carbine, .52 Cal., MFG. Antique, SN: 32071, Lever Action falling block, 22'' Round barrel, A Civil War Sharps Saddle Ring Carbine. Approximately 27,000 New Model 1859 were produced, with this rifle being an early production example as it still utilizes the brass buttplate & forend band, which was later changed to iron furniture. The original wood stocks are very good & solid, with numerous minor to small contusions, scratches & dings to the surviving original finish. Tiny chip at the toe. The stock carries a hinged patch box & brass carbine buttplate. Cartouche inspector stamp on left wrist under the saddle ring bar. The metal finish on the barrel has worn mostly gun metal gray with a thin brown patina, while the receiver has a darker chocolate brown patina. Bore rates very good, bright with strong rifling. The barrel carries the slide adjusting R.S. Lawrence rear ladder sight, with strong snap, & a carbine blade front sight. Markings on right side plate: Sharps Pat Oct 5th 1852 & RS Lawrence PAT April 12 1859, on other side, Pat. 1848. The top of the barrel is stamped ''SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG CO. HARTFORD. CONN.'' forward of the rear sight. Matching SN on upper tang & on belly of barrel under the forend. Saddle ring bar & ring on left side. The stock carries a sling loop. A solid & original condition surviver of a Civil War era carbine. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 1500 to 3000
