CASED & FABULOUS Alexander Henry, Model Break Under lever Rifle, CAL: 450-400, MFG: ca. 1880's Antique, SN: 6660, Lever Break Single Shot Rifle, 28'' barrel. While his name is now best associated with the British Empires Martini-Henry rifles & carbines, Alexander Henry of Edinburgh was a well respected Scottish gunmaker, officially appointed as maker to the Prince of Wales and Duke of Edinburgh. In the mid to second half of the 19th century. Henry patented his drop block rifle in 1865 & of its type, it was by far the most successful & commonly encountered rifle of the era. Henry offered his rifle in three qualities, BEST, SECOND & THIRD, with best quality pre-dominating. This appears to be of the ''BEST'' quality as it displays the engraving &detailing seen on his ''BEST'' quality. These Henry rifles are quite magnificent in terms of their quality, engraving & construction, & secured his reputation with the very high quality & numbers of single & double rifles built.
On this rifle, the cheeked, checkered & capped pistol grip walnut stocks are excellent, with a few minor handling marks to the original finish. Fantastic contrasting grain & fine hand checkering on both pieces of furniture. The belly of the stock has an inlayed gold shield, which is wonderfully engraved with a coat of arms. The case-hardened receiver displays muted case colors, with the receiver, side plate, lever, trigger guard, upper tang, forend lever, portion of the barrel & even the leaves of the rear sight all displaying high density coverage of fine vine & scroll hand engraving. The original blued barrel rates 90% coverage of a plum toning chocolate brown finish. The top of the barrel is engraved ''ALEX.R HENRY EDINBURGH & LONDON'', with British proofs on the belly of the barrel under the forend. The barrel carries a five leaf express rear sight, with leaf's marked with ranges 100, 200, 300, 400 & 500 yards. The muzzle of the barrel carries a platform raised front blade sight, with a flip-up ivory bead option. It is slotted along the side for possible use of a hood. Top of the receiver is engraved ''HENRY'S No. 243 PATENT''. The right side-plate has the auto-cock indicator, with gold ''COCKED'' lettering. The bottom of the barrel is stamped ''400 EX''. Bore is excellent & bright. The buttstock carries a solid red recoil pad. Sling provisions. Comes with an empty cartridge in the case with the headstamp indicating 450-400, which fits properly in the breech. The rifle comes displayed in a magnificent Maker's alligator hide wrapped oak case, with gold embossed lettering ''HIS HIGHNESS THE MARHARAJ RAN OF DHOLPUR''. The case also indicates that it is for ''RIFLE 6659'', one off from this rifle's SN & likely for the sister rifle to this rifle. Inside the case is a leather gold embossed Maker's label ''ALEXANDER HENRY EDINBURGH & LONDON'' & two by Special Appointment crests. The case come with a large number of tools & accessories including, Combination capper/de-capper - seats and/or removes primers, Bullet crimper, Bullet seating tool, Bullet mold with sprue-cutter, Oil bottle with applicator tip inside screw-cap, Wad-cutter, Combination case extractor & several others.
An overall excellent & collector/investment grade hand crafted rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 8000 to 12000
