Purdy, Model Hammer Double Rifle, CAL: 577-500, MFG: 1860-70's Antique, SN: 8916, Under Lever Break Double Hammer Rifle, 29'' barrels. For over two centuries, James Purdey & Sons has ranked among the finest names in gunmaking. From shooting champions to English royalty, Purdey sporting arms have been treasured far & wide, & owning a shotgun or rifle from the famed London gunmaker is a dream come true for countless sportsmen, shooters, & collectors today.
Regarding this rifle, the original beaded cheek, hand checkered & straight grip wood stocks are excellent, with very few tiny handling marks, nicks or contusions to the excellent finish. The case-hardened receiver, lever, hammers trigger guard, & tangs all feature vine, scroll & border hand engraving, with remnants of cose-colors found in more protected areas. The damascus barrels display beautiful milk chocolate brown thumbprint patterns, with game rib engraved ''J. Purdey 314 1/2 Oxford Street, London''. The rib holds a four-leaf rear sight & a long blade sight. Bores are excellent. Sling eyelets. The buttend holds a checkered metal buttplate, with engraving at heel ''CHARGE BURNS No. 6 CORSE POWDER CURTIS & HARVEY''. Curtiss & Harvey No. 6 gunpowder was a popular choice in the 19th century, established in 1820 by Sir William Curtis, Bt, a banker,& W. G. Harvey, to exploit a gunpowder works at Hounslow.
