FANTASTIC WW GREENER, Model Hammer Double Rifle, CAL: 12 Bore, MFG: Ca. 1870 Antique, SN: 8719, Under Lever Break Double Hammer Rifle, 26'' Lamanated Steel barrels. While WW Greener records for the period prior to 1880 do not contain much information, but according to internet information, this 12-bore double rifle was made in 1870 & featured their patented self-retracting striker mechanism (Greener's solution to the tendency for firing pins in the early centerfire era to stick in the soft primers of cartridges of that time, effectively bolting the gun closed after discharge). Self-retracting striker shotguns & rifles were made by W W Greener between 1868 & 1875 & most had Jones under-lever opening mechanisms. Shotguns of this type are not common & rifles are quite rare.
Regarding this rifle, the original beaded cheek, hand checkered & silver capped pistol grip European walnut stocks are excellent, with very few tiny handling marks, nicks or contusions to the excellent finish. There is a 1'' X 1 1/4'' toe repair. The case-hardened receiver, lever, hammers trigger guard, & tangs all feature small accents of decorative scroll & border hand engraving, with remnants of case-colors & smokey outlines. The case-hardened border engraved back action locks are each signed ''W.W. GREENER''. The right side engraved ''SIGHTED WITH 4 DRAMS OF POWDER''. The laminated barrels display beautiful milk chocolate patterns, with game rib engraved ''W.W. GREENER ST. MARYS WORKS. BIRMINGHAM, LAMINATED STEEL''. The rib holds a three-leaf rear sight & a long blade sight. Bores are excellent. Matching SN's found belly of both barrels, the water table & lower tang. Sling eyelets in stock & underside of the barrels. The buttstock holds a checkered metal buttplate. Blank silver oval initial escutcheon inlayed in belly of the stock. An overall excellent, fine & investment grade antique W.W. Greener double rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 5000 to 10000
