SCARCE Remington No. 1 Rolling Block Sporting Rifle, .40-50 BN (Bottle Neck) CAL., MFG: 1870's, SN: 4974, Rolling Block Single Shot Rifle, 30'' Octagon barrel. Matching serial numbers found on the lower tang of the receiver, the underside of the barrel beneth the forend, on the end of the forend where it enters the receiver, on the buttplate & on the end of the stock where it enters the receiver. Matching assembly numbers on the inside upper & lower tangs. On the barrel under the forearm is also stamped ''S.T.'' for set trigger & ''E.S.'' unknown. The single set trigger Remington used on these was simply pushed forward until it ''clicked'' or set & then only a few ounces of pressure was required to fire the rifle. This ''E. Remington & Sons, Ilion N.Y. stamped'' barrel is actually 4'' over the standard 26'' length & customers were charged extra for every 2'' over the standard 26'' length. The 40-50 BN was a popular medium/large game round that fired a 265 grain bullet at near 1500 feet per second & far outclassed the standard .44-40 round of the day. The original straight grip walnut stock & early style forend with the metal schnable tip are excellent. Fine wood to metal fit & they appear to carry the original finish, with a thin protective layer on top of the finish on the stock. There are minor handling marks, light scratches & contusions, along with a 2 1/4'' tight stress crack emanating off the end of the upper tang & running down the right side. Both the cheeks on the stock & forend remain prominent, with the overall appearance of the stocks being excellent, The metal blue finish on the barrel rates 70%, toning a bit plum as it thins, with some spotting & speckled haze. The case-hardened receiver displays smokey outlines & mottled case-colors. Bore is very good, with some cleaned roughness amongst strong rifling. The rifle is fitted with the original Beech folding front side & slide aperture adjusting flip-up sporting ladder sight, however the aperture disk is missing. The stock carries the case-colored steel sporting buttplate. A truly fantastic 150 year old rare & original early #1 Sporting rifle. FFL Req. - Value: 2500 to 5000
