Description

Remington, Model 81 SEMI-DELUXE (CHECKERED), marked .35 REM Cal., MFG: 1940, SN: 9036, Semi-auto take-down rifle, 22'' barrel, This is a Standard Grade rifle which was ordered with additional factory hand checkering. These are often referred to as deluxe or semi deluxe, but not to be confused with a Special Grade (B or C Grade), as they do not have the upgraded wood of the Special Grade rifles. The Model 81 was manufactured with two different forearms. The first 4 1/4 to 5 years of production found the Model 81 stocked with the ''semi-beavertail'' style (referred to as simply beavertail moving forward), which was far wider & longer than the Model 8's. In mid 1940, the beavertail forearm was dropped in favor of the new flat side style. The ''flat side'' is shorter & more narrow than its predecessor. Factory paperwork indicates the reason behind the forearm change was a decrease in labor cost going to the flat side style, but it was also rumored that they realized they likely over did it with the beavertail style due to complaints of it being too wide, too long & adding additional weight to an already fairly heavy firearm. Many collectors prefer the earlier beavertail rifles due to the aesthetics & more likely the simple fact that there were far fewer produced, about 1in 6 of total 81 production. This early fifth year rifle carries the beavertail forend. The original checkered & flat knob pistol grip wood stocks on this example are excellent, having been sanded & nicely refinished. There are some mnor scrratches & contusions remaining to the finish, with very little wear to the original checkering. The metal carries a modern gloss reblued finish, which rates 90% overall, but is starting to develop some haze & speckling as it ages. The barrel has been upgraded with a Marble's semi-buckhorn adjustable rear sight & a small blade front sight. Bore is excellent, clean & bright. Stock carries the Remington checkered metal buttplate. The small metal bead located in the receiver under the arm of the safety is missing, which causes the safety to over-travel. The safety still functions properly, but does travel past the normal point of travel. 4 rd fixed magazine. Sling loops. Smooth tight action. A sharp looking semi deluxe rifle. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 800 to 1200
