Spanish, Americas Colonial era Escopeta (shotgun), Cal: .73 (18.5mm), MFG: 1700s- early 1800s, S/N: None, Flintlock musket, 34 7/8'', Half octagon, Half round barrel, barrel flares out at the muzzle.
HISTORY: This is a classic Escopeta from the Spanish Colonial era in the Americas. It uses the Miquelet lock, popular in Spain from the 16th century to the early 19th century for sporting & military arms. The barrel hold Eibar Spain, Armory proof marks that match a gun made by the Eibar Spain Gunsmith Ignacio Bascaran, dated 1822. This would date this gun from around that time, but this gun appears earlier.
CONDITION: The straight wrist, checkered walnut stock is good with nicks, dings, dents, chips & small cracks from use/age. Chunk of the stock gone on the left side of the forend, by the rear barrel band, 1 1/4'' crack at the back of the chip. Small chip just in front of the lock. There is a crack at the rear of the lock & one on the top of the wrist. Metal is proud to the wood around the buttplate & upper wrist tang. The checkering on the wrist is heavily worn, but still present. The whole stock is carved & styled with beautiful floral designs, edges & designs are worn from rubbing & use wear. The metal has toned to a brown patina with light roughness at the rear of the barrel & on the lock. The barrel has intricate decorative engravings with gold/silver inlays. The rear of the barrel is marked with Eibar Spain & Spanish Armory proofs, please look at the photos provided for a close up of the proofs. Tombstone proof on the barrel reads ''P D'' over ''DOIS'' over ''TUA'', the tombstone proof on the lock plate reads ''USA'' over ''TO'' over ''??'', last markings too worn to read. The barrel is marked with three Fleur-de-lis marks, a cross symbol, & lion in a square proof. The front sight has a spider metal inlay with cross symbols on each side. The bottom of the trigger guard has more decorative engravings with a tombstone stamp in the middle that reads ''TSA'' over ''TO'' over ''??'' bottom markings too worn to read. The trigger guard tangs & upper buttplate extension are shaped/styled decoratively. Trigger guard forms a semi-pistol grip on the wrist. The forward barrel band has two of the four forks broken, the other two are thin from rust wear. The bore is fair, its bright with roughness & some spots of pitting. The barrel holds a bead front sight. The stock carries a metal, half size buttplate, covers the top half on the rear & wraps around the top. Buttplate has roughness/pitting. Gun does not have sling mounts. The gun does have a iron ramrod. Comes with a period correct plug bayonet. These are inserted into the muzzle for use & was common for Spanish hunting guns of this time. Bayonet has no markings, has roughness on the blade. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 2000 to 5000
