Robert Barnett, London, Cyper Gun, Percussion converted, Cal .67, 16 ga, MFG: 1761-1781, S/N: None, Percussion muzzleloader, 41 1/4'', 1/5 octagon barrel.
HISTORY: This is a very early fur trade fusil, made in Britain for trading in the Americas for furs & pelts, mainly beaver pelts. These were made by a variety of gunsmiths in a multitude of styles. This one bears the mark of Robert Barnett on the barrel, a well known London gunsmith. He was a apprentice of Richars Wilson in 1737, he became a master by 1761, & would retire in 1781. He had contracts to make fur trade guns for the north west company. They were a fur trading business headquartered in Montreal from 1779 to 1821. They were a competitor to the Hudsons Bay Company. They were another more famous fur trading company at the time. This gun was likely brought over in the early years of the company. The gun was converted over to percussion some time in the 1830s-60s. the wrist of the stock has a brass medallion with a crown over ''G R'' for Geroge Rex III, king of England from 1760-1820. That medallion is what makes this a Cypher gun.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is fair with numerus chips, cracks, & repairs. The bottom of the forend has worn away exposing the ramrod from lots of carrying/saddle wear. Metal is proud to the wood around the buttplate. Chunk of stock missing from the top of the lock plate, with a loose chunk at the front, its pinned in by the lock. The lock is pinned in by a nail at the rear. The top of the wrist has seven nails driven into it, with two empty nail holes in the middle of the group. The top of the wrist also has a brass medallion marked with a worn crown over ''G R''. the metal has toned to a brown patina with light roughness across all the metal & more concentrated roughness/pitting by the lock & rear of barrel. The top of the barrel is marked ''LONDON'', the rear of the barrel is marked with a worn oval proof over ''*'' over ''RB'' (ROBERT BARNETT), over another worn oval proof. The lock plate has fait remains of some engravings. The medallion in the wrist, the side plate, trigger guard, trigger guard tang, & upper buttplate extension all are styled & have engravings. The bore is poor. Dark with rust & light pitting. The barrel holds a small blade front sight. The stock carries a brass buttplate, has patina & ding marks. The gun has no sling mounts & comes with a wooden ramrod. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 600 to 2000
