Description

R. Ashmore Warranted lock, likely Elijah & Asa Waters armory, Variant Armory-Pattern Musket, Militia musket, Cal: .69, MFG: 1826, S/N: None, Flintlock musket, 42'' barrel.

HISTORY: In George Mollers book, ''Massachusetts Military Shoulder Arms 1784-1877'', he lists a musket of this type to be a ''Variant Armory-Pattern Musket''. These were guns usually built from older surplus, or private contract made parts, for civilian sale, but mainly for Militia members that had to purchase their own musket. These would look like the standard military musket, but fit & finish were not as good as the Military muskets. The barrel is marked with the inspectors stamp of Luke Harrington. He was known to be a inspector of Elijah & Asa Waters barrels. This musket was likely made there using a R. Ashmore warranted lock & was sold to a private militia member. other muskets just like this with Ashmore warranted locks have been found with MFG dates in the mid 1820s, these were likely a production run of muskets made from a large batch of Ashmore Warranted locks.

CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with only minor nicks, dings, & scratches. The stock has shrunk over the years & the metal is proud to the wood around the buttplate & lower tang. There are a couple small cracks/chips around the lock. The metal is unfinished, has speckled brown patina. The rear of the barrel is marked ''P'' in a circle, ''M''., ''LH 1828''. The bayonet stud is marked ''I''. The lock plate is marked ''R'', ''ASHMORE'', ''WARRANTED''. The lock plate also has tulip & star burst engravings commonly found on Ashmore warranted locks. The bore is very good. its bright & clean with only minor roughness. The front barrel band holds a blade front sight. The stock carries an iron buttplate with patina & roughness. Musket has both bottom sling loops & a ramrod. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 1500 to 3000
