Remington, Model: 1863 ''Zouave'' rifle, .58 Cal, MFG; 1863, S/N: None, Percussion rifle, 33'' barrel.
HISTORY: The history about the Remington ''Zouave'' rifle is shrouded in mystery & what we do know leads only to more questions. Approximately 12,000 of these rifles were made from 1862-65 by Remington with their own unique bayonet for each rifle. The interesting thing is that these stayed in storage throughout the civil war & did not see any use, despite the dire shortage of arms through the whole conflict. Because of this the examples we have today are usually in excellent condition. Three rifling types can be found on these rifles, seven groove, five groove, & three groove. The Seven groove barrels (like this one) are found on ealry production rifles as they used leftover tooling from the Model 1841 Mississippi rifles Remington made. The left-over tooling would wear out & be replaced with more modern tooling where we find the five & three groove rifling. The name ''Zouave'' was not a military designation & is believed to have come from early Francis Bannerman catalogs where he bought the rifles as surplus from the government & marketed them as being used by Zouave units during the civil war. There is no real documents or evidence that these units were outfitted with these rifles. & with so many of them being in excellent condition, the story of them being put into storage is much more believable, nevertheless, the name stuck.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is excellent with a couple minor scratches & scuffs around the stock flats. brass patch pox in right cheek, has extra nipple inside. The metal appears to have a old re-finished with some roughness under the finish on the lock & by the percussion nipple. the blued finish rates 85% with areas of thinning & spots starting to tone brown. the rear of the barrel is marked ''1863'', ''US'', over ''V'' over ''P'', eagles head. The rear left flat of the barrel is marked ''STEEL'', ''G.P''. The lock plate is marked ''1863'', a American great eagle over ''REMINGTONS'', ''ILION N.Y.'', ''U.S.''. upper tang of buttplate marked ''US''. both barrel bands marked ''U'', front band marking is faded. The bore is fair. Has roughness & spots of pitting, but is bright with strong rifling. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up three leaf, U-notch rear sight. The stock carries a brass buttplate, has light wear & patina. The rifle has both bottom sling loops & has a ramrod. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 2000 to 4000
