Description

Westley Richards, Model: Portuguese Monkey-Tail carbine, M1873 Artillery carbine, Cal: .450, MFG: 1867, S/N: P80, Capping Breechloader rifle, 20 1/4'' barrel.

HISTORY: In 1866, Portugal would order 8000 rifles for the Cacadores regiments, 2000 carbines & 1000 pistols for the Cavalry Two thousand of the rifles would be delivered in 1866, & the rest of the guns were delivered in 1867. The rifles were used until 1872 when they were replaced by Snider converted Enfield rifle. The cavalry would follow in 1873 be replacing their carbines with Snider converted Enfield carbines. The monkey tail carbines were then modified with a bayonet lug & standard sling swivels & issued to the Artillery. The artillery would eventually switch to snider converted Enfield carbines & these would go into storage until they were sold on the surplus market.

CONDITION: the straight wrist wood stock if fair as having heavy termite damage. There are arsenal return cartouches on the left flat of the stock. One heavily worn & illegible, the other reads ''FA'' over ''1885''. The ''FA'' is if for ''Fabrica de Armas'', the date it was returned to the arsenal & refurbished. The worn marking must been from when it was modified into a artillery carbine, & the second is from when it was taken out of service of the military & went into storage. The metal has toned to a brown patina with spots of thinning & scratches. The top of the breech is marked ''WESTLEY RICHARDS'', ''PATENT'', & a triangle. The left side of the chamber is marked with multiple British proofs & the S/N. the rear of the barrel is marked ''.483'', ''R'' over ''WR'', ''WHITWORTH PATENT'', & ''.480''. The lock plate is marked ''1867'' in a triangle, ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO''. ''80'' marked on bayonet lug. Hammer is missing it retention screw. The bore is good. Its bright & shiny with roughness throughout the bore. The barrel holds a small, wide blade front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 1 to 4, the ladder is marked 5 to 8. The stock carries a brass buttplate, has patina & ding/wear marks. Rifle has both bottom mounted sling swivels, & comes with a ramrod/cleaning rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 500 to 1500
