Springfield Armory, Model: 1866 Trapdoor 2nd Allin Conversion. Cal: .50-70, MFG: 1864 lock & barrel,1866-67 conversion, S/N: None, Single shot trapdoor rifle, 36 5/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: The Springfield model 1866 is the second Allin-designed trapdoor breech-loading mechanism conversion for Springfield muskets. The Model 1866 fixed many problems with Allin's first model (1865), they added a simplified and improved extractor, relined the .58 Cal barrels to .50 Cal & used the new .50-70 cartridge. The first model used unmodified, old .58 caliber barrels from the muzzleloaders & a .58 RF cartridge. The 1866 model also still used old percussion locks from the 1863 muzzleloader, this would be changed in Allens 3rd model in 1868. Approximately 25,000 .58 caliber Springfield Model 1863 rifled muskets were converted by Springfield Armory into the 1866 model. The Model 1866 was issued to U.S. troops in 1867 and was a major factor in the Wagon Box Fight and the Hayfield Fight, along the Bozeman Trail in 1867.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good as being lightly sanded & re-finished. Stock has some nicks, ding, & scratch marks. The Inspectors cartouche is partially visible on the left flat of stock, just above the trigger. The metal has toned to a mix of brown patina & gun metal gray with spots of darker patina. The left side of the barrel is marked ''S'' by the breech block pin, & ''S'' at the rear. the rear left corner flat of the barrel has a small eagles head stamp. The top of the breech is marked ''1866'' over an eagles head. The lock plate is marked ''1864'', an American great eagle, ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD''. Upper extension of buttplate marked ''US''. The bore is Good. Its bright with thinned rifling & spots of roughness/light pitting at the muzzle. rifling has been counter bored about 1'' back, up to the front sight base. The barrel holds a small barleycorn front sight with a flip up U-notch/aperture rear sight. The stock carries a bare steel buttplate. Toned to a brown patina with spots of roughness. The rifle has both bottom sling loops & the cleaning/clearing rod. rifle comes with ''US'' marked socket bayonet with leather frog, but no metal sheath. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1200 to 2400
