Description

RARE!!, Remington, Model: No.1 rolling block M1872, New York state militia cavalry carbine, Troop C, Cal: .50-70 MFG: 1873 S/N: NVSN, Breech loading single shot rifle, 22'' barrel.

HISTORY: These Carbines were part of the second order of 4500 rolling blocks in 1873, ordered by New York for its state militia. 1500 of those rifles were cavalry carbines. These are a special model made just for the New York state militia; the hammer drops to half-cock when the breech is closed. Normally it stays in the full-cock position, this was one of the reasons why the military did not adopt the rolling block & went with the Springfield (the real reason was it was designed at Springfield, so no licensing rights to pay, & they could easily convert older muzzleloaders making them far cheaper, which the military cares about the most) There was concerns of accidentally firing the rifle as it was shouldered, so this was added to these models. These carbines were made to arm the cavalry, but in 1875 just two years later, the Adjutant general recommended the disbandment of the cavalry units in state militias. New York would disband most if not all of its cavalry units on the grounds it was too expensive to maintain. in April of 1889 New York would start re-building their cavalry & a independent troop of cavalry was raised (Troop A). Soon this would expand to the three-troop squadron A. In December of 1895, Cavalry Troop C was raised. In 1897 the entire cavalry force of New York is listed as 337 Men, this is the same year they would exchange their rolling blocks for the Springfield trapdoor rifles. Troop C was attached to the 2nd Brigade in Brooklyn. Their job was primarily riot control, a job that was regularly done by militias around this time. The carbines were also issued to the artillery units. In 1885 the entire artillery force, with officers was 529 men, & in 1897 was down to 349 men. There were no more orders for carbines as the order for 1500 back in 1873 was enough to equip all of the states cavalry, artillery, engineers & signal corps. In 1899 the remaining carbines would be sold to Francis Bannerman & then were sold on the commercial market.
