Description

Remington, Model: No.1 rolling block, 2nd Spanish contract, Cal: .43 Spanish MFG: 1870-73, S/N: NVSN, Breech loading single shot rifle, 35 1/8'' barrel.

HISTORY: Spain would place three large orders for rolling block rifles from Remington. The first one was in 1868 for 10,000 rifles for Spains colonial army in Cuba. The second contract was 50,000 rifles in 1871. The third contract was in 1873 for another 10,000 rifles. This rifle being a second contract it has the updated breech block which is ''Flat'' across the base, & below the face. It also has the older two-line Remington address that ends with ''APRIL 17th 1866''.

CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist walnut stock is good. stock has shrunk/worn & the metal is proud to the wood around the wrist tangs. The stock appears to have been sanded & oiled somewhat recently, has no nicks, dings, or scratches from use in contrast to the rest of the gun. The left cheek of stock is handed carved ''FLL'' over ''**''. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & dark patina. The metal is covered with roughness/pitting scars, & light rust. The upper tang address marking has mostly worn away, but some remains. It is the standard two line address found on 1st & 2nd contract guns that end in ''APRIL 17th 1866''. The left side of the chamber is marked ''P''. The three barrel bands are marked with a crown. These appear to be from a third contract rolling block. The bore is good. Its bright with thinned rifling & roughness. The barrel holds a small barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 1 to 4, & the ladder is marked 5 to 10. The stock carries a steel buttplate, bare steel with patina. The rifle has both sling loops & the cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 350 to 700
