Saxon Importing Co. (French) (Belgium), Model: Zulu Shotgun converted from French 1867 Tabtieve rifle, Cal: 12 Ga Black Powder only, MFG: 1880s, S/N 2137, Single shot breech loading shotgun, 34 7/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: This started life as a French made Muzzleloader, either a MLE 1842 or a MLE 1853/57. It was then upgraded with the Tabariere breech loading system. invented in 1864, roughly 358,000 rifles had been converted by July of 1870, in time for the Franco-Prussian war where they were used by second line troops or in defensive roles since this weapon system was inferior to the Chassepot rifle. After the war they were sold to Belgium who converted them into very cheap shotguns, known today as ZULU guns. This was done in the late 1870s to the 1880s. large numbers of these would be bought by US importing companies & sold on the US hunting market as a cheaper alternative than the US made shotguns. Sometimes there were marked with trade names of ''ZULU'', or ''HUNTER''. These shotguns would cost 3-5 bucks where a US made pump action shotguns costed 15-20 bucks. This gun comes with a photocopy of a old Saxon ad from Harpers Weekley in 1881, that shows these guns being sold for $5.50
CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is very good with nicks, dings, scuffs, & scratches from use/age. The outline of the original French cartouche is visible, as well as the dog wood plug which showed French government ownership is still in the middle of the cartouche. The left side of the stock, just below the breech is marked ''SAXON'', marking has faded but is still visible. The metal has completely toned to a brown patina. any French markings have either worn away or have been buffed away. Many Belgium proof marks on the breech, receiver, barrel & most other metal parts. the bottom of the breech block is marked ''2137''. Breech is missing the firing pin, & the hammer sears are worn. They do catch but easily slip & fire the hammer with even slight pressure on the hammer. The bore is poor, dark with rust & pitting. The barrel holds a bead front sight. The stock carries a metal buttplate, toned brown with roughness. No sling mounts. With the problems this gun has, its being sold AS IS with NO RETURNS ACCEPTED. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 100 to 250
