Afghanistan Royal Arsenal Kabul, Model: Type 2 Martini-Henry Carbine, Cal: .577/450 Martini-Henry, MFG: 1898, S/N: None, Lever action single shot rifle, 21 3/8 barrel.
HISTORY: These Martini-Henrys are copies of the British MK.2 Martini-Henry Carbine. They were made at the Kabul Arsenal from 1897-1901. These differ drastically from the Kyber Pass Martini-Henrys. The Kabul Arsenal was a legit military arsenal with proper machinery & skilled workers trained by the British gunsmiths. They used good steel & did proper proof testing as these were issued to the actual military & are on par with the quality of the British made Martinis. The rifles made in 1897-98 were not serialized as they did not have the roll stamp machinery to do that until 1899. The rifles made in 1897 are marked on the Knox form (top of the chamber just after the receiver) with a Tunghra acceptance mark, 1898 & on production were marked Abjad 97531 in Arabic proof stamp, like the rifle here. Between the type 1 (rifle), & the type 2 (carbine), 30,000 guns were made.
CONDITION: The two-piece, straight wrist wood stock is good with numerus nicks, dings, chips, & scratches from use/age. Two arsenal wood repairs. One square on the top of the wrist with one nail reinforcement, the other is on the left rear of the forend & has three nail reinforcements. The finish has either worn away completely, or it was left in the white as no finish remains of the metal. Metal has spots of roughness/cleaned pitting. The right side of the receiver has the Kabul Arsenal Mosque stamp over two lines of text in Arabic, that roughly translate to Kabul Workshop. The Knox form is marked with three sets of Arabic text, two of markings translate Abjad 97531, the other is the part number 22 & was used to match all parts of the rifle up. The buttplate, lever, trigger guard, barrel bands, nose cap, & the cleaning rod are marked with this as well. The right side of the chamber has an Arabic symbol. The buttplate has more Arabic stamps, appears to be a unit marking. The bore is good. Its bright with roughness & spots of light pitting. The barrel holds a small barleycorn front sight with a tangent ladder V-notch rear sight, Arabic numerals sight graduations on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate, has speckled brown patina. The rifle has both bottom sling loops, front loop is dinged up. Rifle has a cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
