Description

Ross Rifle Co., Model: 1905 MK II 3-star Ross Rifle, US marked training rifle., Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1907, S/N: 1953 (marked only on the stock), Bolt action straight pull rifle, 28'' barrel.

HISTORY: The Ross rifle has a long & very interesting story. This rifle is just a small part of that. In 1917 the US was sending troops to the front lines to fight. They wanted everyone sent overseas to be armed with the same gun, or at the very least the same caliber. But the US was having problems scaling up its M1903 production for its growing army. So, a stop gap had to be made until it could catch up or another solution could be found (they would eventually find with the M1917 Enfield). The US would use older obsolete rifles for home guard troops, or for training, where keeping them repaired & supplied with ammo was much easier than on the other side of the world. Leaving more of the standard arms for front line use. 20,000 ross Rifle MK. II 3 stars were bought for training rifles. They were marked with a Flaming bomb & US on the bottom of the wrist.

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip walnut stock is very good with small nicks, dings, & scratches from use/wear. One larger chip in wood on the right cheek. The top of the wrist has darkened from hand oils. The bottom of the wrist is marked with two faded Canadian proofs, US flaming bomb, ''US'' & the S/N. The right cheek of stock is marked with line out regiment & unit markings that read ''A'', ''RCD'', ''131'', (RCD for the Royal Canadian Dragoons). A worn roundel cartouche that's reads ''QUEBEC'' on the bottom & ''D'' arrow ''C'' in the middle; the markings on the top of the roundel are illegible. To the right of the Roundel is the markings ''3*'' over ''II.'', ''362/1907'', ''U''. Further right of those markings are ''9MH/1'', ''2/13''. The S/N & MFG date for Ross rifles was stamped onto the stock & not on the metal. The blued metal finish on the barrel rates 80% with spots of thinning/ toning brown & scattered brown patina. The blued finish on the receiver has mostly worn away exposing gun gray & is starting to tone brown. some blue remains in protected areas. Thinned remains of case-hardened finish on the bolt. The left side of the receiver is marked ''ROSS RIFLE CO QUEBEC.CANADA.1905.'', ''PATENTED''. The rear of the bolt channel is marked with a worn crown proof. The bolt handle marked ''4392'' & with a couple proofs, & the bolt head is marked ''5202''. The bore is very good. Its bright & shiny with light roughness throughout. The barrel holds a hooded, square post front sight with a V-notch/aperture, flip up ladder rear sight. The stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate. Has worn gray with spots of patina. Nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has four sling swivels. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 1200 to 2400
