Description

New England Westinghouse Co., Model: M1891 Mosin, US inspector marked, Cal: 7.62x54mmR, MFG: 1915, S/N: 1280521, Bolt action rifle, 31'' barrel.

HISTORY: During WW1, Russia needed many more rifles to arm its growing army. They would buy up any & all surplus available & give contracts out to any company willing to make Mosin rifles. One of these companies was New England Westinghouse. Most of the rifles would be delivered to Russia before the Bolshviks took over & cancled the contract, refusing to pay for the guns delivered claiming the guns were substandard. This almost bankrupted Westinghouse & Remington who were also making mosins. The US government would step in & buy up the remaining supply of rifles from Westinghouse & Remington that were in the US, stopping them from going out of business. The US would use these rifles for training troops, state militias & the national guard. These rifles would also be used to arm the American expeditionary force sent to Intervene in the Russian civil war. Multiple expeditions were sent out from 1918-1920. They were sent to support the White Russians against the Red communists Bolsheviks. They armed these men with the Mosins since it would be cheaper to use locally sourced ammo in Russia, rather than shipping ammo over there for our Springfields. The majority of these rifles were abandoned in Russia when the US left in 1920. This rifle with the US inspectors marks & the Made in USSR stamp is likely one of the rifles sent over there & left, then when it was imported into the US, per import standards it needs to be marked with what country its being imported from. This creates a interesting mix of markings on the rifle, with a US made Mosin being marked Made in USSR. This rifle likely made it into the US with all the other Spanish imports as the location & style of the made in USSR stamp is just like them. This rifle was likely part of the mosins sent to Spain to assist in their civil war.

CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various nicks, dings, scuffs, & scratches from use/age. Spots of dark oil satins on wood. The right cheek of the stock has a heavily worn roundel cartouche, markings are illegible outline is barely visible. The metal has a arsenal re-blue. The metal finish rates 85% overall with small scratches, spots of light thinning & some spots starting to tone brown. Metal has spots of lacquer applied. The top of the receiver band is marked with a worn ''MADE IN'', ''U.S.S.R''. the rear of the barrel is marked with a eagle over the standard 2nd issue Westinghouse marking that reads ''NEW ENGLAND'', ''WESTINGHOUSE'', ''COMPANY'', 1915r'', the S/N, a partially visible US flaming bomb stamp, multiple eagles over ''X'' & number stamps, they read ''X2'', ''X4'', ''X5'', & ''X6'', with others being to worn to read, & other small proofs. Markings are faded from the re-blue job. S/N matching magazine floorplate. S/N mismatched bolt & buttplate, both are Remington marked. Old grease in action. The bore is good. has strong rifling but consistent roughness throughout the bore. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a Konovalov V-notch rear sight. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate with spots of wear & patina. The rifle has both sling wells with added sling loops. Rifle comes with the correct M91 socket bayonet, Remington marked mismatched S/N. A Unique Mosin thats markings indicate to a long life around the globe. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 500 to 1000
