Waffenfabrik Bern (Swiss), Model: 1869/71 Vetterli, Cal: 10.4x38mm RF Swiss, MFG: 1869-74, S/N: 130982, Bolt action rifle, 33 1/8'' barrel. The two-piece. Straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various small nicks, dents, scuffs & scratches. There is a cross over a shield cartouche on the right cheek of the buttstock & rear forend. The bottom of the wrist has one small cartouche, & the belly has two more. All markings are worn/faded. The blued metal finish on the barrel retains almost full coverage but has mostly toned to a brown patina with scratches exposing gun metal grey. A lacquer has been added over the metal. The blued metal finish on the receiver rates 55% with scratches, spots of roughness, thinned finish & brown patina. Lacquer has been added on the top of the receiver. The left side of the receiver is marked with a Swiss cross over ''WAFFENFABRIK'', ''BERN'', the S/N. The top of the receiver is marked with two small worn proofs. The left side of the barrel is marked with a ''L'', the S/N & a small worn proof. Other small metal parts marked with a mix of proofs. All visible marked parts are S/N matching. The bore is good. Bright with thinned rifling & roughness. The barrel holds a blade front sight with a tangent U-notch rear sight, range markings are worn & illegible. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate. The buttplate has wear & patina. Rifle has both bottom sling loops. Has cleaning/clearing rod. This rifle was one of the most advance & cutting-edge rifles when it was designed back in the 1860s. most gun designers at this type were working on developing single shot cartridge guns or converting their muzzleloaders to single shot cartridge rifle. The Swiss developed a bolt action, magazine fed rifle using a intermediate rimfire cartridge. The bolt design used a dual rear locking lug design which would be advanced even 20 years later. Today all these features are standard, but back then it was unheard of, leading to this rifle serving as the base for other people to improve their rifles, making these features standard. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 400 to 800
