Description

Spandau Arsenal, Model: I.G. 71/84 Mauser, Quebec Home Guard, Cal: 11x60mmR Mauser, MFG: 1888, S/N: 2232, Bolt action rifle, 31 1/2'' barrel.

HISTORY: This is one of the Rifles The Quebec home guard of Canada bought from the Francis Bannerman company at the breakout of WW1. When WW1 broke out many Canadian home guard units began mobilizing & arming themselves incase the war made it back home. Some of units had plenty of funding & could afford top of the line, new production military arms for their troops. The Quebec home guard was not as lucky & had to look at cheaper alternatives. They would turn to the Francis Bannerman company in the US who was a MASSIVE surplus arms dealer at the time, he was arming entire small nations with all their military needs. He would even Built a Castle on the Pollepel Island in New York to store all his military arms, ammo, uniforms, swords & much more. Bannerman would buy up large amounts of surplused Mauser 71/84 rifles from Germany as they were switching to the Gew 1888 & the later Gew 1898, most of them in brand new condition being made just & not seeing any conflict. The Quebec home guard bought a large batch of these rifles from Bannerman & would arm themselves with them. They were unmodified from when the Germans sold them even having old unit markings still on the guns. The Quebec home guard would stamp the stock ''QHG'' & with a rack number & leave all the old German markings.

CONDITION: the straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various nicks, dings & scratches from use/age. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''Q H G'', ''2'', two larger German crown cartouches & one small crown cartouche. There are two more crown cartouches on the bottom of the wrist, as well as two more on the belly of the stock. The blued metal finish on the barrel retains almost full coverage but is toning to a brown patina. some deep bluing remains around stock line & protected areas. Bluing rates 25%. The receiver is correctly left in the white. The receiver appears to have been very lightly cleaned of rust, markings are all still crisp. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, 'I.G. MOD. 71/84.''. the right side of the receiver is marked with one imperial German proof & ''1888''. The left side of the barrel is marked with the S/N, a small crown proof, a crown over ''F.W.'' proof, & another small crown proof. The top of the barrel is marked with a crown over ''SPANDAU''. The right side of the barrel is marked with four Imperial German proofs. Top of the buttplate is marked with the unit marking ''6.R.J.'', ''2.146.''. All visible S/N marked parts matching including the screws. The bore is very good. Its bright with spots of light roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight, with a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 4 to 15. The stock carries a steel buttplate, left in the white. The rifle has three sling loops. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
