Description

Mukden (Hoten) Arsenal (Manchuria) Model: Type 38, Cal: 6.5x50mmSR, MFG: 1932-38, S/N: 5002968. Bolt action rifle, 31'' barrel.

HISTORY: The Mukden Arsenal was seized by the Japanese army in September 1931. They would recover over 200,000 rifles & just over 3 million rounds of ammo that was stored at the arsenal, & they would turn the production of rifles over to Type 38 production. When the Japanese took over it was renamed to the Mukden Army, Inc. & was owned 50/50 by the puppet Manchukuo government, & Japanese companies Mitsui and Okura. In 1938 The Japanese government took over all the shares of the company & would rename it again to the Hoten Arsenal (The Mukden name was still used in English documents). Production would run from 1932 to Early 1944 when Hoten switched to Type 99 production, making them the last arsenal to produce the type 38. Many Type 38 rifles would return to the arsenal after WW2 this time owned by the Chinese. This time to re-chamber them to 8mm Mauser, the Chinese standard cartridge at the time. The Mukden Arsenal would make around 148,000 Type 38 rifles from 1932-44. Compared to the total production of 3.5 million rifles makes these hard to find.

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip stock is very good with nicks, dings, scratches, & wear from use/age. Japanese style two-piece buttstock. Wood has shrunk around toe & magazine leaving the metal proud to the wood. The wood finish is a mix of original & added oils. three faint Japanese cartouches on bottom of wrist. The blued metal finish on the receiver rates 90% with light speckled patina & grind marks where the chrysanthemum was. The blued finish on the barrel rates 93% with wear near muzzle & very light speckled patina. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, the Mukden Arsenal logo, & one small inspectors stamp. The top of the receiver is marked ''TYPE 38'' in Japanese. The rear of the barrel is marked with three small, symbols in circle proofs. S/N mismatched bolt & rear sight. S/N matching front barrel band. The bore is very good near excellent. Its bright with minor wear & very light roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective ears, & a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 5 to 24. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate that's toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. Rifle has cleaning rod & both bottom sling loops. A nice example of a rarer manufacturer Type 38 rifle. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 350 to 700
