Description

Tokyo Arsenal, Type 44 Cavalry Carbine, First Model, Cal: 6.5x50mmSR, MFG: 1920s, S/N: 26498, Bolt action rifle, 19 '' barrel.

History: The Type 44 was designed in 1911 for Cavalry troops. Before they used the Type 38 Carbine but with the detachable bayonets, there were concerns of losing the bayonet, difficulties of attaching it on horseback, & with how much stuff the trooper had to carry. The prominent feature of the Type 44 is the fixed folding bayonet & stacking rod to fix this issue. The cleaning rod was moved to a trapdoor in the buttstock & was two-piece, not one like the normal rifles. Other than the markings, bayonet, & cleaning rod, its exactly like a Type 38 Carbine. Although it was intended for cavalry troops, many other units such as transportation/supply units used these carbines, while some cavalry troops continued to use the Type 38 carbine. Approx. 92,000 Type 44 carbines were made which is a drop in the bucket compared to the almost 7 million type 38/99 made during the same time period.

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip Japanese walnut stock is good with numerus nicks, dings, scratches & gouges from use/age. The stock has darkened in spots from added oils. Japanese style two-piece buttstock. The blued metal finish on the receiver rates 87% with light patina speckling & grind marks on the top. The blued metal finish on the barrel rates 86% with very light patina speckling & wear/thinning at the muzzle. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, the Tokyo Arsenal logo, & two small inspector stamps. The top front of the receiver is marked ''TYPE 44'' in Japanese, & the marks from the ground off Chrysanthemum. The top rear of receiver is marked with a circle proof and a triangle in circle proof. The left side of the barrel is marked with a triangle in circle proof & a ''S'' mark. S/N mismatched bolt, bayonet & bayonet lug to the rifle. All bolt components are matching each other. The bore is very good. Its bright with strong rifling but has light roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective ears, & a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 5 to 20. The stock carried a blued steel trapdoor buttplate. No cleaning rods in stock. Rifle has both left side sling loops & stacking rod. The bayonet is the Type 1 variation with the short housing & no drain holes in the bayonet channel of the stock. A nice example of a battle used Type 44. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 700 to 1500
