RARE!! Westley Richards, Model 1867 ''Monkey Tail'' Portugese Cavalry Pistol, CAL: .451, MFG: 1867, SN: 877, Percussion Breach Loading Pistol, 9 1/4'' rifled barrel.
HISTORY: This pattern pistol was tested by the British Ordnance about 1863 against the standard cavalry weapon, although found superior, was never adopted. One of the main reasons was it's weight. 1,000 pistols were ordered in 1867.
MARKINGS: Right side plate: ''1867'' inside triangle & ''WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO''. Breech Cover: ''WESTLEY RICHARDS/PATENT''. Barrel Housing: ''25 GRAINS'' (top), ''877'', ''52'', & multiple proofs. Barrel: ''WHITWORTH PATENT'', ''475'', ''CROWN/WR'', ''451''. Stock: cartouche ''F.A/1873''. Inside trigger guard: ''877''. Photos will show markings in further detail.
CONDITION: The original wood stock is good & solid. There are contusions, scratches & scrapes & a few epoxy fills throughout. There are remnants of laquer finish. The barrel, side plate, & breech cover are all worn to metal gray, with spotting toned to a brown patina. The brass hardware has an aged patina. Bore is poor, with heavy pitting amongst visible rifling. A unqiue & rare example of a ''Monkey Tail'' pistol. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 3000
