Description

Henry Repeating Rifle, 2nd Variation, .44 Henry RF & Henry CF Cal., MFG. 1866-67, SN: 14276, Lever Action Rifle. 24'' Oct barrel, This antique rifle is a wonderful example of a western collectible. As Henry rifles transitioned into the production of Winchester 1866 rifles, the serial number range overlapped during 1866 & 67. The first documented Winchester 1866 rifle was SN 12,476, with production for that year running through SN 14,813. Despite the many improvements found in the 1866 rifle over the Henry rifle, limited quantities of Henry rifles continued to be ordered & produced. Research indicates that the highest SN or last Henry rifles produced were in the earliest 14,XXX serial range. This rifle, SN 14276, would likely be one of the last Henry rifles produced. Winchester 1866 rifles were primarily chambered in the 44 Henry RF configuration, like the Henry rifles. While some were later converted to centerfire by both gunsmiths & the Winchester factory. This Henry rifle, being a late production model, has a unique setup, as the consignor indicates it carries an 1866 Winchester Dual RF/CF firing pin. We did not test fire the rifle to verify that it indeed will fire both RF & CF cartridges. The wood stock appears to be a later replacement, however it does carry a stamped matching SN in the upper channel of the wrist. If original, it has certainly been sanded & refinished. The straight wrist stock is excellent & solid, with very few handling marks remaining to the darkened finish. The metal sits proud to the wood along most edges. The original barrel blue has completely worn from the rifle leaving an aged gun metal gray. The barrel & mag tube carry all the authentic wear from heavy western wear & use, including edge wear, nicks, contusions, abrasions, scarring & cleaned pitting. The lever & hammer display the remains of the original blue & a thin brown patina, with some pitting & speckling. The octagon barrel address has long since worn from existence, although there remain portions of the last three digits of the SN stamped on the top of the barrel between the receiver & the rear sight. The receiver & buttplate display a nice aged patina, again with light scratches, abrasions, contusions & edge wear. The receiver is of the late variation in shape, having the rounded ring rather than the distinctive three flat sided bell of the early production examples. The left side of the lower tang carries a full SN stamping. The stock carries the later variation, square depth buttplate screws, which are inset into the inletted buttplate. The trapdoor buttplate carries the full matching SN stamping. The bore is very good, but with areas of cleaned roughness & pitting amongst strong rifling. The barrel is fitted with a rolling barrel ladder rear & a standard low blade front sight. The magazine tube & spring work smoothly. Action is tight & also functions smoothly. The lever latch is a later gunsmith replacement, which works well. The rifle comes displayed in a very nicely constructed Oak storage/ display case, with red felt interior. Also comes with 10 rare original rounds of ''U'' headstamped Union Metallic Cartridge Co. Henry Rimfire cartridges, 15 rare original rounds of ''H'' headstamped Winchester Henry Rimfire cartridges & a 50 round case of modern special-order 44 Henry CF, produced specifically for the 1860 Henry rifle by 2nd Amendment of Gleeson Arizona. This is a very nice Henry rifle, case & ammo set, & possibly one of the very last Henry rifles produced. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 15000 to 25000
