Description

Evans Rifle, Model 1877 ''New Model'' Carbine, CAL: 44, MFG: 1877-79, SN: N/A, 22'' round barrel. The Evans Repeater is often considered to be one of the most unique rifles to ever be produced in the United States. The Evans was invented by Warren R. Evans, a dentist from Thomaston, Maine. With the help of his brother George, they perfected the rifle & started the ''Evans Rifle Manufacturing Company'' of Mechanic Falls, Maine in 1873. Their rifles were marketed by Merwin & Hulbert. The hope was that the rifle would be issued by the United States Army, but the complex loading mechanism failed the standard dust test. It was then promoted as a sporting rifle. The rifle has a radial block receiver similar to the Spencer, but the rounds were fed from an Archimedean-screw magazine which formed the spine of the rifle stock & holds up to 32 rounds This rifle holds 20 Evans Long rounds. The fluted cartridge carrier made a quarter turn each time the lever was operated, feeding a new cartridge into the breech. A total of almost 15,000 Evans repeating rifle were produced & has the unique distinction of being the only firearm mass-produced in the state of Maine in the 19th century. The Evans rifle also had the greatest magazine capacity of any rifle mass-produced in the 19th Century. The original wood stocks are excellent & solid, displaying minor to small contusions, scrapes, nicks & scratches. The wood has the original finish & has developed a dark rich tone. The metal finish has toned to an even gary/brown patina, with speckling throughout. Bore is very good, with some roughness amongst solid rifling. Steel trapdoor, loading port buttplate. Barrel carries a folding, slide adjusting ladder rear sight & tall blade font sight. Sling loops in the stock & on barrel band. Tight smooth action. A very unique & unusual rifle with great history. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2500 to 4000
