RARE J.P. Hubbard-London Day's Patent Can Gun, 50 cal, Circa 1827-35. No SN, Percussion, 28 1/4'' Barrel length. 34 3/4'' overall cane length, plus 11'' if mounted with screw on shoulder stock. The handle measuring 3 1/4'' long. The ''J.P. Hubbard-London Day's Patent Can Gun'' is a walking stick firearm, also known as a cane gun, that was popular in Britain during the first half of the 19th century. It utilized a ''Day's Patent'' ignition system, patented by John Day around 1823. This system was incorporated into various types of firearms including these types of cane gun. This example was manufactured by J.P. Hubbard, at his London address. Disguised as simple a walking canes, these were primarily marketed to urban gentleman for personal protection, but also to farmers & thus the screw on buttstock. These were muzzle-loading, percussion firearms with iron barrel, under hammer & trigger system, with curved walnut one piece grip handle. The under hammer design was likely used to keep the powder dry. The cane gun carries a medallion on the back left side of the barrel, which features an embossed coat of arms, with a lion & unicorn, & marked ''(J.)P. Hubbard 26 Newgales - Days Patent''. The trigger & hammer system extend from the barrel when the ring is pulled, engaging the tension spring. Once the trigger is pulled, the hammer drops onto a percussion cap previously affixed to the nipple. Mechanism appears to function properly, although the ring is a modern replacement. The piece shows a chocolate brown patina, with some spotty remnants of black finish on both the barrel & the walnut handle. The stock suffered a wrist break & has been glue repaired & further strengthen with screws & rivets. Stock carries the original metal buttplate. An authentic survivor of a bygone era, which is extremely rare, especially with the original accompanying stock. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 2600
