Description

EXTREMELY RARE Remington, Model 8, TRIALS RIFLE, .25 Rem Cal, MFG. 1920, SN: 45616, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' barrel. This isn't just any Model 8, this one of the very Rare U.S. Trials models! In 1921, the Army Infantry School at Fort Benning received 25 Model 8 rifles chambered for .25 Remington. Warfare was evolving at the time, & the U.S. needed rifles to test the viability of a semi-automatic platform. While the model 8 was not developed nor intended for actual combat, these rifles were upgraded for testing & the development of tactics & military doctrine of a semi-auto rifle. The rifles were upgraded in collaboration with Springfield Armory with upgraded sights & a lengthened military style grooved forend with sling swivels. The barrels were provided without rear sight provisions, as the rear sight was to be the Lyman 48 aperture peep sight. The book ''The Great Model 8'' by John Henwood lists the serial range for these rifles as 42200 to 45737 for known examples. This one falls within the later portion of that range. The original straight grip stock & forend are excellent, with both appearing to have been lightly sanded & nicely finished. There remain very few tiny handling or wear marks, with the exception of one larger scrape/contusion just above the sling loop on the right side of the stock. The original metal blue finish on the receiver rates 70%, toning a bit plum as it thins. The finish on the barrel has evenly wore or simply faded to a thin brown patina. Bores on any Model 8 rifle in 25 caliber are rarely great for whatever reason, however the bore on this rifle maintains an excellent bore. The rifle carries the correct Lyman 48 aperture peep sight & the special customized tall blade front sight mounted on a raised base. The buttstock carries a vintage Red Duck ventilated recoil pad, which required a small wood inlay into the toe to fill the void where the lower tang would have been on the original crescent metal buttplate. The stocks carry the original sling loops which are unique to the trials rifle. 5 round fixed magazine. Tight action. This is a rare opportunity to purchase the rarest variation of the Remington 8 & 81 family, & the Holy Grail to enhance any Remington collection.* FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 10000 to 15000
