UNIQUE Remington, Model 81(Modified detachable magazine), marked .300 SAV. Cal., MFG. 1946, SN: 25787, Semi-auto take-down rifle, 22'' barrel, One of the features hunters & shooters often hoped from Remington was a detachable magazine rather than the standard fixed mag. Remington never offered this feature in the model 8 or 81& thus many a gunsmith or garage fiddler attempted a conversion. Most were little more than butcher jobs that often compromised functionality. There are a few exceptions most notable is the work of R. Krieger & Sons of Mt. Clemens, Michigan. This is not a ''Krieger'', but is a rare example of a gunsmith well executed conversion utilizing the rifle's existing 4 round box magazine. It has a sliding button release mechanism located on the upper right side of the trigger guard. The magazine fits snuggly in place & functionality appears excellent. It certainly adds to the ease of loading & would potentially allow for additional mags to be utilized. Like a ''Krieger'', a detachable mag conversion is often one of the few modification to an original factory rifle that does not typically detract from its value, rather to some it may indeed add a premium. On this rifle, the original factory flat grip wood stock & forearm are excellent. There are very few tiny handling marks to the excellent finish. The original metal blue finish rates 95% on the barrel. 90% on the receiver, with much of that lose found on the mag. The receiver carries a William's peep, which is often preferred to other peep or tang sights amongst serious hunters due its adjustability & the solidness of the mounting. The barrel carries screw filled rear provision & standard blade front sight. Stock carries the original checkered metal buttplate. Bore is excellent. 4 shot detachable magazine. A quality & very nice looking detachable mag rifle in the popular hunting caliber of 300 SAV. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 800 to 1500
