Updated 8/11/25: CASED, Alexander Henry, Under Lever Double Barrel Shotgun, CAL: 20GA, MFG: 1870's-80's, SN: 5336, Break Action SxS, Choke: IM/CYL, 28 3/16'' Damascus barrel. This gun was originally manufactred as a rifle in .500BPE caliber, then bored out to the current configuration in 20GA.
HISTORY: While his name is now best associated with the British Empires Martini-Henry rifles & carbines, Alexander Henry of Edinburgh was a well respected Scottish gunmaker, officially appointed as maker to Her Majesty the Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Edinburgh & other individuals of royalty & wealth. In the mid to second half of the 19th century, Henry patented his drop block rifle in 1865 & of its type, it was by far the most successful & commonly encountered rifle of the era. Henry offered his rifle in three qualities, ''BEST'', ''SECOND'' & ''THIRD'', with best quality pre-dominating. This appears to be of the ''BEST'' quality as it displays the engraving & detailing seen on his other ''BEST'' quality examples. These A.H firearms are quite magnificent in terms of their quality, engraving & construction. Henry has secured his reputation with very high quality craftsmanship.
MARKINGS: The top of the barrel rib is marked ''ALEX.R.HENRY EDINBURGH AND LONDON. MAKER TO THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESS' THE PRINCE OF WALES AND DUKE OF EDINBURGH''. Both side plates are marked ''ALEX.R. HENRY''. The SN is marked on the lower tag & on the water table. There are various proof marks & factory markings on the barrel/water table.
CONDITION: The original checkered, capped & beaded cheek stock is excellent. The checkered forend is excellent. There are some minor scrapes & contusions to the stocks. There appears to be a thin layer of added protective oils or finish, over the original finish. The browned finish on the Damascus barrels is excellent. The fingerprint pattern is prominent. The receiver, side plates, hammers, break lever, trigger guard, lower strap, forend break lever, grip cap, buttplate & sling eyelets are all beautifully, intricately & tasefully hand engraved with fine floral & ornamental scroll work. The case-hardened receiver, side plates, hammers, break lever, trigger guard, buttplate & eyelets all display excellent case-colors. The case-colors are more noticeable in protected areas, with handling areas worn to metal gray, with shadowing remaining. Bores are excellent. The solid, matted rib holds a single front bead that appears to be interchangable. Engraved & checkered buttplate. Sling eyelets. Comes in original leather case, with green interior. There is an A.H label on the inside lid. The case has normal wear from use. There are some popped stitches on the corners/edges & the left handle loop is torn. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 4000 to 10000
