T. Burnett, Plains Rifle (Left Handed), CAL: 32, MFG: circa 1866, SN: NONE, Percussion Muzzleloader, 34'' octagon barrel.
HISTORY: Thomas Burnett - born in 1832 in the State of New York. He was a gunsmith at Eureka, Humboldt County, California, arriving there before 1866. In 1881, he patented a breechloading rifle in which the trigger guard lever is adapted to open the breech and extract the shell (Patent No. 250,495). Thomas Burnett was in partnership with Edward H. Burnett in a gunsmith shop, 1882-1885. (Ref: page 48, Shelton, Lawrence, P, California Gunsmiths 1846-1900). Samuel A. Goddard, New York, New York 1858 was an importer of locks from his factory in England (Sellers) (Ref: pg 185, Author Unknown, Firearms Trade)
MARKINGS: The top of the barrel flat is faintly marked ''T.BURNETT''. The left lock plate is marked ''GODDARD/WARRANTED''. The lock plate has simple decorative engraving & a bird game scene behind the hammer. The left stock flat has punch dot initials ''ZB'' ?, they are barely legible.
CONDITION: The Curly Maple straight grip wood stock is good & solid. There are two cracks on the left side of the forend & one crack on the right side running through the lock plate screw. There are other contusions, dings, scratches & scrapes throughout. Some areas of the stock have darkened over time from added protective oils. The non-brass metal components have all fully toned to a brown patina. The brass trigger guard has an aged patina, with spotting & handling marks. Bore is fair, dark & rough. The under barrel rib is beginning to separate from the barrel. The barrel holds a fixed rear sight & small blade front. Stock has a crescent brass buttplate. Double set triggers. Ramrod present.
